How in-browser background removal actually works here

Background removal is marketed as magic. The ToolNest tool is more modest: try an on-device model; if that fails, knock out colors similar to the corners.

What “in the browser” means

Your photo is not posted to a ToolNest API. A third-party library (@imgly/background-removal) may download a model from a CDN into the browser. That is still local inference, but it is a network download of model weights — the privacy policy describes this.

When the fallback runs

If the model cannot load (blocked CDN, offline, unsupported browser), a corner-color knockout runs. It is useful for a product on a near-white seamless background. It will not spare flyaway hair.

Check the matte before you publish

Download the PNG and view it on light and dark backgrounds. Jagged edges and missing holes in glass are normal for this class of tool.

Questions

Do you claim studio-quality cutouts?+

No. Use a photo editor when the subject is complex or the result will be printed large.
